Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For many Nintendo fans this game is the crown jewel of their Wii collection. And for many good reasons. But instead of me fanboying the game(It is my favorite Wii game) let me analyze what makes it so much fun to play.
Gameplay: This is a fighting game with Nintendo characters. However it is not a traditional fighting game. Unlike most fighting games you don’t drain an opponent’s HP to 0.(Although this style of play is still available as an Options mode) Instead you have to get opponents to fly off the stage. This is a unique change and it makes multiplayer hectic and a blast to play….locally.
Graphics: It’s no secret that the Wii is behind the Xbox 360 and PS3 in this area(Hell it doesn’t even get HD) but this game has great graphics. With the new Smash Bros game on Wii U being so much better graphically one can see the age of this game’s graphics but they are really good. Especially coming off of Melee.
Music: This game has an extremely wide soundtrack from across a lot of Nintendo franchises from Mario to Legend of Zelda to Pokemon and every in between. And it’s great. There are so many great tracks in this game from so many different franchises that there is something here for everyone.
Depth: This game has a lot of depth. From smash combos to edge grabbing to meteor smashes there is so much depth to find for expert players. Competitive Smash players may dislike the slowed down gameplay from Melee’s being fast paced but there is still some competitive detail players will find.Even the Final Smashes(A character’s ultimate attack you can use once you obtain the Smash Ball) which some might be Over Powered but some are good competitively.
Online: Online play is a staple of many last and current generation games. However Nintendo lacks this area even though they’ve tried to nail it down. They may have succeeded in Mario Kart Wii’s online they really screwed up the online here. It is noticeably laggy and often it disconnects for no reason. There is some fun to be had but not much. Although Nintendo will discontinue Wii online in May so this will no longer be an issue but it is something that should be fixed in the next game.
Final verdict: This game is a great multiplayer experience and is my favorite Wii game.If you have friends who are good at Smash expect to have a great time. Easily worth the discounted price at $30. I give this game a 9.75/10
