Ten years ago, Lion Head Studios released what is known today as a one of the classic staples of Role-Playing Gaming. Fable. A game that put players in moral based situations, making almost every decision the player makes determine how the world around them changes. Fable: Anniversary recently released, giving a new age of players a chance to experience the game that changed Role-Playing Games for years to come. I’ll be covering all the Good and Evil done with this Epic Remake, so enjoy reading!
First, LionHead and Microsoft did a stellar job recreating the feel and controls from the original. While it felt like a modern control scheme, they essentially layered out the controls to format the Xbox 360 controller. In doing this, they still allowed players to abuse the awkward Camera and Lock On system. While this makes the game’s combat aspect more fun, it makes no sense that they wouldn’t at least make an attempt to make fix the control issues from the first game. Overall, The control layout was nothing special or majorly different then the original.
With the exception of awkward controls many, almost ALL, visual bugs were fixed with the completely redone HD character models. It almost looks like they used different models for everything in the game. Characters look better and SOUND better; but unfortunately still have almost no real mouth movement, which is upsetting. However, seeing Classic Legendary Swords rip through horrifying hordes of Balverines looks so much more brutal then ever!
While the Story remained virtually the same, LionHead managed to add new Items to the game, through DLC, pre-order, and some other neat things, and as all Fable Franchise fans know, all items have lore to them. LionHead ALSO finally added a Codex to decipher the Ancient Language and Text of Albion, which allows players to go through all the games now and explore the ancient text in ancient language hidden throughout them! If you haven’t played the original, I highly suggest playing just for the story alone!
Overall, Fable: Anniversary Edition reminded people why Fable became a staple of the RPG Genre. While It could have used some minor tuning, It still manage to recreate the feeling given to players who loved the original. While we still have to wait for the Unreleased Original Expansions to become DLC and the player made DLC to be confirmed, what we’re given keeps us playing over and over. In the end, I’m going to give Fable Anniversary Edition, an 8.5/10! Pick up this game for only 40$ and enjoy the hell out of it for hours upon hours, and possibly even years!
