This game truly showed what the Wii’s true potential is and it did so beautifully. It has possibly THE best graphics on the Wii within a year of the Wii’s launch. So what if the Wii lacks HD? This game looks gorgeous without it. And the graphics isn’t the only thing about this game that’s gorgeous.
The game has you control Mario who got invited to the Star Festival,a once every century event that focuses on shooting stars visiting the kingdom, and Bowser shows up and crashes the party, and steals the Princess and Kamek blasts away Mario so he’s no longer capable of stopping him. Well if the past 29 years have proven anything it’s that Mario will always beat Bowser. Mario then wakes up on a strange planet and Rosalina explains to him what Bowser’s plans are and how he needs to collect Stars to get to the center of the universe(Nintendo Logic FTW) to stop Bowser.
What makes this game stand out from it’s predecessors is the gravity mechanic. Each planet you go to has it’s own gravitational pull so sometimes you can go under the planet and pull back around the side. It’s really fun to horse around with but keep in mind this isn’t always the case. Sometimes doing that can result in death. And you have to travel across a bunch of galaxies to collect stars(And you get Grand Stars after you beat a boss). By doing this this fuels your “space ship” and will allow you to travel to the center of the universe.
This game does have some boss fights like I mentioned but most of them are relatively easy. Surprisingly the Bowser fights are the hardest but they’re still kinda easy. Despite this they are really fun. The game has a decent amount of challenge to it since the later levels can get extremely annoying. As a little side bonus as you progress you can read Rosalina’s backstory. I recommend you check it out as it is very…well…. Let’s just say I had Star Bits coming from my eyes.Speaking of Star Bits the way you use the Wii motion controls is you point at the screen as you play to collect Star Bits which if you keep many of them at once you can feed them to hungry Lumas(little star-like creatures who assist you) to gain access to extra galaxies and extra areas of missions to get a hidden star. This is an excellent use of the pointer of the Wiimote.
There are a few interesting power ups such as the Bee suit and the Boo mushroom which turns Mario into a Boo and grants him the ability to float in the air for a short time. And the dreaded Spring Mushroom which turns Mario into a spring and gives him bouncy controls and a high jump. This power up is irritating to say the least. It’s insanely hard to control and not very useful for much.
And one more aspect I want to cover is the soundtrack. Oh my gosh it is amazing. Most of the songs in the game are really well orchestrated and are a blast to listen to. Just listen to the Gusty Garden Galaxy song to prove my point. Overall the game is fantastic. Must buy for any Wii or Wii U owner. Easily a 9.5/10
