Super Smash Bros. This is a game for the Nintendo 64 that people remember as one of the best along with Super Mario 64,Mario Kart 64,and Ocarina of Time. And it was great for it’s time…….but it didn’t age that well. Don’t get me wrong it’s still great but it is not as good as it was in 1999.
There was once a game for the Super Nintendo called Dragon King: The Fighting Game. It was going to use the Super FX Chip found in games like F-Zero. It was intended to be the very first game in a new franchise and featured no established Nintendo characters. Then the development shifted to the Nintendo 64 to use the console’s improved graphical capabilities as well as 4 man multiplayer. Somehow out of this humble little title created a fighting game like no other featuring Mario,Link,Pikachu,Kirby and more and it spawned a legacy of smashing proportions.
Earlier I mentioned that is not as great as it used to be. It’s still really fun to play but it is simply weaker than the succeeding entries in my opinion. Not because I’m 14 and didn’t play this as a kid but because there is less to it. There is not much content at all. Just 12 fighters(8 when you start),and only a small number of stages. Super Smash Bros Melee for GameCube releasing 2 years later blew this game out of the water in terms of content, graphics, and gameplay. The game is really fun like I said but I just find less enjoyment out of it than I do the other entries. Despite this I’ll forgive the game by not giving it a lower score for this reason as it had a small budget and was a title to experiment with.
The reason this game is fun and unique is because there are NO other fighting games like this. Instead of simply draining HP from your opponents like a lot of fighting games at the time you kill your opponent by damaging them slowly and then launching them off the stage which is usually themed by Nintendo’s premier franchises appearing in the game and are not generic like most fighting games.
Overall this game is really good and I highly recommend it for anybody who owns a Nintendo 64 or Wii to purchase although if you played the others first it’ll be hard to appreciate it and give it the credit it deserves. Nevertheless it is still a must have for your Nintendo collection. I’ll give it an 8/10
