New Super Mario Bros. This is one of the first games I've ever played. This is also the first game I have ever 100% completed.
This game was released in 2006. A time when most Mario games were 3D (Mario 64,and Sunshine with Galaxy being released the following year) and it returns to the roots of the series being a 2D side scrolling platformer.
The game combines a 2D background with 3D models making a 2.5D effect and it looks great. Although it does show it’s age a bit it still looks good (Especially for its time). As the title suggests it is a New Super Mario Bros game designed to give players who grew up playing the NES classic nostalgia but also introduces a new generation to the series (Including myself as I was 6 at the time) and it does so really well. You play as Mario (although you can also play as Luigi via a certain button combination when starting a file) and your goal is to rescue the Princess who was kidnapped by Bowser and Bowser Jr. You run, jump, and stomp across 8 worlds much like the game on NES and the levels are well designed and fun to play. However it is a bit on the easier side (there are a handful of challenging levels here and there) the levels are fun to play.
If you’re looking to 100% complete the game it will take a while as there are 3 hidden Star Coins in every level as well as the occasional secret exit. Doing this can be quite challenging as some of them are hard to find. The bosses at the end of each world are unique surprisingly. You only fight Bowser twice(Once in World 1 and again in World 8)and you fight Bowser Jr at every tower or mid-boss and the rest are unique fights although none of them are memorable 8 years later this does add a sense of “new” that it’s successors could have learned from. Overall this is a good game and is a must have for any DS or 3DS owner. This game is an easy 8.5/10.
